Leaving valuable oil-reserves underground for the sake of the environment is an expensive idea for any country let alone a developing one.

But there is a plan in Ecuador to do just that, aimed at protecting the Yasuni National Park in the north east of the country.

If it works Ecuador could have hit on a way to put the brakes on an ever-voracious oil industry, turning black gold into green gold.
