Former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has visited Russian-occupied Crimea to lay flowers with President Putin at a memorial to Sardinian soldiers killed in the Crimean war.

Berlusconi, described as a “personal friend” of Putin’s, said he would be pushing for an end to sanctions against Russia imposed after it took Crimea from Ukraine.
