Amnesty International says the chairman of its branch in Turkey has been detained by authorities.

The human rights group says Taner Killic was among 22 lawyers arrested over claims of being linked to a network that Ankara blames for a failed coup attempt last year.

Authorities have not commented but the Secretary General of Amnesty, Salil Shetty, reacted by saying: “The pressure in Turkey after the coup attempt, reaching the Chairman of the Board of the Turkish Branch of Amnesty International, is new evidence of how far this situation has advanced and how arbitrary it has become.”

Tens of thousands of people have been sacked or suspended across the country in the wake of the failed coup.
