Poland's new prime minister visits Brussels amid judicial reform concerns

Poland’s not on the best of terms with the EU right now, with its controversial judicial reforms viewed as violating European values. So, will the meeting of the country’s new prime minister and the European Commission president in Brussels help clear the air?

One MEP thinks Mateusz Morawiecki Moraviexki may pass the buck.

“I think that probably he could say I am not responsible for some decisions taken in 2016 and 2017, I am the new prime minister, so I need to have a credit for the work of my government,” said Michal Boni, a Polish MEP from the European People’s Party group.

Boni doesn’t think there’ll be a change of heart over the judicial reforms. Reforms that are so controversial that Warsaw’s facing an unprecedented sanctions procedure, which could see it stripped of its voting rights.

But there are calls for calm and for funding not to be cut.

“To cut the cohesion funds would be very severe. I would therefore advise to exhaust all possible ways to find an agreement with the Polish government before considering this option. We are trying to get our Polish friends on board,” commented Karl-Heinz Florenz, a German MEP, also from the European People’s Party.

The Polish Prime Minister recently met his Hungarian counterpart in a show of solidarity. The EU’s suing both countries for not taking in asylum seekers.
