A well-known lawyer with a tough reputation has been hired by the US Vice President amid the probe into possible ties between Russia and the Trump election campaign team.

Mike Pence has brought in Richard Cullen, a former federal prosecutor who has defended top officials in high-profile investigations, including the former FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

On Thursday Trump lashed out on Twitter at reports he was under investigation for possible obstruction of justice.

The president has also hired his own lawyer amid probes by a special counsel and congressional committees.

The outside lawyers will help Trump and Pence respond to inquiries from special counsel Robert Mueller.

He is investigating whether anyone on Trump’s campaign team, including his son-in-law Jared Kushner, may have had illegal dealings with Russian officials during the campaign.

Actions by Trump and others in relation to the Russia probe are also under the spotlight.
