A woman in her 70s was killed and three other people were wounded in a stabbing attack by at least one Palestinian in a suburb of Tel Aviv on Sunday, police and medics said, as tensions remained high across the region following the killing of two senior militants in separate strikes.

The police said the attack was carried out by a Palestinian militant, who was “neutralised,” and that a search was underway for other suspects in Holon, where the stabbings occurred.

It comes as Israel braces for retaliation after the killing of a senior Hezbollah commander in a strike in Lebanon and Hamas' top political leader in an attack in Iran's capital last week.

The police initially said four people were wounded. Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service later confirmed that the woman had died. It said a 70-year-old man was in critical condition, a 68-year-old man was in severe condition and a 26-year-old man was in moderate condition.

The rescuers said the wounded were found in three different locations, each about 500 meters apart.

The attack follows an Israeli strike earlier on Sunday in Gaza, which hit a tent camp housing displaced people in the courtyard of Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital, killing four people, including a woman, and injuring others, health officials said. They did not say whether those killed were civilians or fighters.

The hospital in Deir al-Balah is the main medical facility operating in central Gaza, and thousands of people have taken shelter there after fleeing their homes in the war-ravaged territory.

On Saturday, at least 16 people were killed after another Israeli airstrike hit a school housing displaced people in the northern part of the Gaza strip

A further 21 were wounded, according to the Palestinian Civil Defence.

The afternoon airstrike on the Hamama School in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood in Gaza City knocked out part of the complex.

After the initial strike, a resident reportedly received a call from the Israeli military telling him the school would be attacked again, leading people to flee.

The Palestinian Civil Defence also warned on Saturday that it is running out of fuel used for ambulances and fire engines, saying that its work might be forced to a stop within hours.

The death toll inside Gaza is now nearing 40,000.

At least 39,550 Palestinians have been killed in nearly ten months of fighting since Hamas’ 7 October attack on Israel which triggered the war.

That figure comes from Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count.

Israel has accused Hamas of embedding themselves within the civilian population, putting it at risk.

Most of Gaza's population of about 2.3 million is displaced, many people multiple times, as Israel's military returns to areas where it says Hamas militants have regrouped.

Health services and sanitation have largely collapsed across the territory as hunger grows.
