Croatian firefighters in a small town near the country’s second-largest city, Split, said they had worked all night to prevent a large wildfire from growing and engulfing homes.

Fire Chief Slavko Tucakovic on Wednesday morning said 250 firefighters were on the scene in Žrnovnica and were being assisted by Canadair planes.

He said the waterbombing aircraft had been involved in extinguishing a fire raging nearby in the mountainous area of Gornja Podstrana.

The Croatian Firefighting Association said 700 hectares of grass, low vegetation, and forest have been burned.

The wildfire broke out on Monday after a lightning storm and intensified on Tuesday due to strong winds.
