"It's been three years, are you ready to play again?"

The second season of hit K-drama series Squid Game has finally got a premiere date, with Netflix revealing today that the hit Korean drama will debut on 26 December.

The teaser trailer for the new season is, rather fittingly, Olympics-themed and subtly harrowing. It shows the start of a track event, with runners in the infamous green tracksuits gradually overtaking the athletes and stumbling as they progress. Then, we pan to the guards and the Front Man, who asks the ominous question: "It's been three years, are you ready to play again?"

One surprise did come at the end of the teaser, revealing that Squid Game has been renewed for a third and final season, which will be released in 2025.

Check out the trailer below:

Series creator, director, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk posted a letter to fans in which he wrote: “I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story. We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you another thrill ride.”

Hell of a Christmas present...

According to the official description for Season 2, the story will focus on Player 456 who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”

As previously announced, Lee Jung-jae - who won an Emmy for playing Gi-hun / Player 456 - will return to star alongside fellow returning cast members Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo.

The first season of Squid Game debuted on Netflix in September 2021 and became a worldwide phenomenon, surpassing Stranger Things and Bridgerton to become the streamer’s most-watched original series of all time. The series received 14 Emmy nominations with six wins. Those include a win for Hwang for best director for a drama series, one for Lee for best actor in a drama series, and another for Lee You-mi for best guest actress in a drama.

See you in December, when the real game begins...
