The newest addition to the vibrant London art scene, the latest outpost of the Modern Contemporary (Moco) Museum launches on Saturday 10 August. Would you participate in Marina Abramović’s upcoming interactive show?

Art lovers visiting London may have Tate Modern, the National Gallery and Saatchi Gallery on their to-do lists (among a long list of others), but now there’s a new kid on the block: Moco is bringing yet more art to the British capital.

With a collection including works by the likes of Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama and Banksy (if you haven’t had enough of the guerrilla artist this week), the independent commercial museum has found its home at London’s iconic Marble Arch, taking over an expansive three-floor space – and giving the (often rather stressful) Oxford Street shopping experience some much-needed creative flair.

Beyond the impressive roster of works in its collection, Moco Museum – which has locations in Amsterdam and Barcelona, and is a private initiative by gallerists Lionel and Kim Logchies – is inaugurating its life in London with a temporary show by pioneering performance artist Marina Abramović.

Opening on 11 September, Abramović’s ‘Healing Frequency’ show features 12 works from the artist’s ‘Transitory Objects for Human Use’ series, designed to foster moments of reflection, connection and interaction. Central to the show, and newly acquired by Moco Museum, will be Chair for Human Use with Chair for Spirit Use: two chairs where visitors sit facing each other, perhaps holding each other’s gaze.

“The power of performance art lies in its ability to transform both the artist and the audience. The artist’s body is the medium, as is the observer’s,”  Abramović said of the upcoming show. “Moco understands the importance of direct experience in activating the power of art.”

Moco Museum London opens 10 August 2024. Marina Abramović’s ‘Healing Frequency’ exhibition runs 11 September 2024 - 11 March 2025.
