Yuanyuan was the first panda to give birth to cubs in Taiwan. She was born in China in 2004 and was then gifted to Taiwan when she was four years old, along with a male panda called Tuantuan, as part of a cultural exchange programme.

The two mated - which is relatively rare in captivity - and had two female cubs named Yuanbao and Yuanzai. Yuanzai is currently 11 years old and Yuanbao is 4 years old.

China has engaged in "panda diplomacy" since the 1940s, sending pandas to other countries to improve ties and to promote wildlife conservation.
