Police had warned of an "armed and dangerous suspect" in the city's Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood at around midday, warning locals to get inside and lock their doors.

Fady Dagher, chief of the Montreal Police, said the force received a call at 11:35 am about a shooter at the Hilton hotel.

"It was a citizen - a witness - who called to say that there was someone with a rifle at the window," he said.

There was an exchange of fire with police when officers arrived at the scene before the suspect was shot dead after making their way to the ground floor, he added.

Montreal Police named the officer killed in the shooting as 34-year-old Mohamed Lamine Benredouane.

"His passing is a great loss for our organization. His sense of duty, dedication and professionalism will forever be remembered," the force said in a statement.

The civilian has been named as Michael Mizrahi.

"Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this unimaginably painful time," Monsef Derraji, a member of the National Assembly of Quebec, wrote on Facebook. "We extend our deepest condolences to them".

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
