A national ceremony in the Netherlands marking 80 years since liberation from Nazi occupation was briefly disrupted on Monday by pro-Palestinian protesters.

Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans was delivering a speech in Wageningen when several demonstrators shouted “Free Palestine” before being removed by police.

Five people were detained, and parts of the crowd responded with boos.

Despite the disruption, Brekelmans continued, joined by Dutch PM Dick Schoof and Polish PM Donald Tusk, who later called for European unity.

In a separate incident, a smoke canister was thrown onto a festival stage, though no arrests were made.

The ceremony took place near the site where German forces surrendered in 1945, formally ending the occupation.
